Meet Film 42
So what you do?
Film-Well im a dj, producer, remixer from chicago dead beats crew and ghetto division from the southside of Chicago. I am also attending school to major in music business.
That's whats up, what kind of style are you into when it comes to mixing?
Film-When im going to go spin somewhere it all depends on how im feeling before i mix and the mood im in, it may be some electro, disco house, dutch house, or bmore but i am mainly a house dj although at times i do drop some hip hop. At times it also depends on the crowd if you play something and they aren't really feelin it you gotta be prepared with other music to test it out and see how people react, you want the people to go crazy.
What do you think you bring to the table as a DJ other DJ's dont?
Film-When i mix i try to connect with the crowd and i try to interact with them as much as possible. If someone comes up to me and tells me you snapped or good job and i don't know them i'll make sure to say wasup to them when i see them again, i talk to everybody and stay away from the word "cocky" because i can't stand cocky people, i feel there is no need for it. Overall i think i bring a feeling of love for music when i mix.
Werd up, a lot of people change like that do you think it could potentially happen to you?
Film-Nope, im going to be the same person i am today forever, im always going to be a very humble person, you respect me i respect you.
So how do you feel about people when they try telling you you change because of DJing and you dont stick around like the old days?
Film-In order to get something you want, you need to work hard and keep at it, even if it means staying in the studio for hours and hours just working on music. Yes its going to keep you away from what you used to do when you were younger not giving a damn in the world and doing whatever but people need to realize that some people have a lot of things going on in their lives, not everyone lives the same life. Some people grow up and some people don't, some people end up being successful and some aren't so lucky it all depends on the effort you put in. When people tell me i change i just laugh because i know who i am they obviously don't.
What can you say about your development as a DJ from when you first started to now?
Film-Man i started off nowhere, i didn't know anyone in the music industry and everyone knows it's all about connects. I started off at friends birthday parties to family parties djing for free. That went on for about 2 years and after that is when i started to get bigger gigs. I didn't start doing house parties until the beginning of 2008, and from there on i started to mix every weekend. Now i have been doing lounges, clubs, restaurants, stores, anything that thrown at me i take. Overall i feel i have come a long way from when i first started.
Where do you see your self in 5 years?
Film-Hopefully traveling man, exposing my music to other parts of the world and being a successful full time producer and dj. This is something i have been wanting for years and nothing is going to stop me.
What inspires you and gives you that motivation to keep doing what you do best, even though there must be days were you want to give up, what makes you pick up your head?
Film-Everything inspires me, different artist, buildings, sounds i hear everywhere, but mostly the guys from ghetto division such as Charlie Glitch, Rampage, MaddJazz, and Rob3. I looked up to them when i first started going to there parties at Hot Jams, then when i started to actually get in touch with them it motivated me even more. Yea there days that i don't want to work on anything but i always remember that i can't make a mark for myself in music if i don't work hard.
Any new music you working on?
Film-Always. I got two new original tracks im working on right now and i should be doing a couple more remixes soon not sure who yet though, but im always working on music.
Plans on dropping a mixtape to get your name out there more?
Film-Yes, i am planning on dropping one soon, don't have a set date but there will be many mixtapes, some free and some that will be pressed.
And final question what advice you give to those upcoming DJ's?
Film-Never give up and don't let anyone stop you from what your doing. There a shitload of "DJS" now in days some that do it just for the money and fame and some that do it for the love of music. I support those who do it for the love, because if you don't then you really don't appreciate music and the amount of work that has been put into it. All i need to say is that if you really want to do this for a career, good luck keep working, talk to as many people as possible and network your ass off.
